After saving every possible portion of her scant income, twenty-one year old Nika Petrovskya has finally run away from home. What she leaves behind are little more than memories of pain, abuse, and despair. Lidia, Nika's great aunt, was never capable of loving her, but she is the only link to Nika's past, a past that will haunt her no matter where she goes.
Anya, a motherly friend and fellow Russian immigrant, provides Nika safe passage into her new life and helps her find a new job with her new fiery, confidant roommate, Reyna. Once she begins, Nika must rediscover the good pieces of her life, especially the prodigious talent and intelligence that her mother nurtured in her so long ago, and put down the remaining horrors, one piece at a time.

I LOVED Blind Sided also by this author. When I saw another book by this author I jumped on it. I liked this book too, not as much as Blind Sided, but it was a Good heart warming story.
It is about a girl who was born in Russia then something terrible and tragic happened to her family and she was shipped off to live with her Aunt Lidia in America. The book starts with her escaping Aunt Lidia 9 years later.
The book is not action packed, but is the story of her learning to live and accepting herself as she lays down the pieces of her past and learns to forgive, accept and move on. It is about a man that really loves her. And about her becoming the person that her parents always intended for her to become.

The main strength of this story is how it is told. We don't know what happened to her family at the beginning. We only know she feels guilty about it. We don't know the extent of what she endured afterwords, we just see her becoming free physically and then, not as quickly, emotionally. I loved "Mr. Thorpe" and how he progresses in my imagination to "Simon".

The best part though, is in the chapter called "Nika Insults the Russians". I still laugh out loud about that part.

Putting Down the Pieces eBook Cheryl Leigh Reviews

I enjoyed reading this book. No swear words or sex made this the kind of book I enjoy reading. A good story and a happy ending.
What a . Wonderful touching story. I had a hard time putting it down. I highly recommend th uhh this book.
I enjoyed this book quite a bit. It didn't thrill me the way Blind Sided did, but it's still very worth your time.
I really enjoyed this book. I thought it was heart warming...A great love story without using vulgar words or bad bedroom scenes.
Such a sweet book! I really enjoyed the story, getting into it was quick -- even though hard to understand why some could be so mean -- reminded me that this is a real world and I am thankful that I have lived a life with good family that loves me. Some are not so fortunate!!
This is not a book that you just can't put down, but is a good story about a girl with an abusive background that does hold your interest. . I enjoyed it very much because I was comfortable with it. and I enjoyed the things Nika was able to accomplish in spite of the way she was raised by her abuser. I will look for more books by Cheryl Leigh as I enjoy good morals and values in a book that are hard to find in today's society.
4 and 1/2 stars.
I had the chance to read this book and really liked the heroine, Nika. She's such a strong character, and goes through so much, and always has a positive outlook.
In the beginning, she doesn't think herself worthy of more, despite the big change she starts with. Through her education and group of friends, you follow her growth and have a front row seat to her development; she comes to believe in herself.
I loved Nika and Simon's relationship, and how it grew from employer/employee to friendship to being in love. Simon was the perfect hero, so supportive and swoon-worthy.
I highly recommend this one.
